Arijit’s Great Return – Why Kolkata Mysteriously Goes Missing?

The maestro turns City of Joy into a ‘City of Sorrow’!

Arijit’s Great Return – Why Kolkata Mysteriously Goes Missing?

A thick veil of mystery now hangs over one striking omission from singer-maestro Arijit Singh’s spectacular return to the live stage.

As the musical phenomenon announces a nine-city stadium tour across India from January-May 2027 to celebrate two decades of his extraordinary career, there is one glaring absence from the itinerary — his hometown Kolkata.

Unbelievable, but true: Kolkata (Sorry, Jiaganj in Murshidabad district to be absolutely precise!) does not figure among the nine metros chosen for Arijit’s biggest-ever concert tour.

Beginning in January and running through May 2027, the Stadium-scale India Tour, produced by Team Innovation with thumpN as exclusive ticketing partner, will take the singer to Ahmedabad, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Mumbai, Bengaluru, New Delhi, Pune, Indore and Hyderabad.

Each concert promises an international-standard stadium experience, complete with elaborate production, cutting-edge technology, spectacular visuals and an extended runway designed to bring the singer physically closer to the audience.

Yet Bengal — the soil that nurtured one of India’s most distinctive musical voices — is conspicuously missing.

The omission is bound to shock and bewilder Arijit’s vast fan base in West Bengal, particularly because his journey from a young contestant on the 2005 reality show Fame Gurukul to one of the most celebrated voices in contemporary Indian music has been followed with unusual intimacy in Kolkata and across Bengal.

Glorious Return to Solo Musical Pursuit

Arijit, who jolted his fans with his announcement earlier this year that he was stepping away from playback singing to concentrate on his solo musical pursuits, has nevertheless chosen this moment to return to the stage in spectacular fashion. And what a return it promises to be…....

Over the past 20 years, his voice has travelled far beyond the boundaries of Bollywood — from Tum Hi Ho and Agar Tum Saath Ho to Channa Mereya, Kesariya, Chaleya and, most recently, Jai Jai Ram from Ranbir Kapoor’s Ramayana. His songs have become less like recordings and more like emotional landmarks in the lives of millions.

His enormous digital following underlines that phenomenon. Arijit commands a staggering global audience across streaming and social platforms, placing him among the most-followed Indian musical artists in the world—over 190 million followers in Spotify.

For Arijit, however, the 20-year milestone appears to be less about celebrity than gratitude.

“This 20-year journey in music has been one of immense gratitude,” he said, crediting listeners for giving life to his songs. He said he was eagerly looking forward to travelling across India, standing on stadium stages and sharing “the feeling of live love” with audiences — along with countless songs, memories and encounters.

That sentiment makes Kolkata’s absence all the more intriguing.

For an artist so deeply associated with Bengal, the city is more than another concert stop. Kolkata is the cultural geography behind the voice — the hometown audience that has watched his evolution from an aspirant singer to global phenomenon.

Perhaps there is a practical explanation. Perhaps Kolkata may eventually be added to the itinerary. Or perhaps the omission is simply a strategic decision in a carefully structured stadium tour.

For now, however, the unanswered question is louder than the music itself: when Arijit Singh celebrates 20 years of a journey that began in Bengal, why will his grandest homecoming apparently not be in Kolkata?
